We saw the kick-off for this year’s 2024 En Primeur (EP) campaign in late April, and many buyers
such as yourself may have been holding back. I understand that cracks in the EP system – poor
post-release price performance and oversupply – have deepened over the past decade, and
that is a concern to you as it’s all about value. Only 8 wines were released below the price of any
other vintages available on the market: Lafite, Carruades, Mouton, Petit Mouton, Angelus, Calon
Segur, Leoville Poyferre and Lynch-Bages.
Critics differed in their appraisals though most agreed that ‘2024 is an inconsistent vintage’.
According to Neal Martin, (the 2024 vintage) “is a year where quality resides with those in the
possession of the best terroir, those with the deepest pockets and those who made the right
decisions at the right time.” He remarked that 2024 favoured dry whites over reds, awarding his
highest score of 96-98 to La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc. Haut-Brion Blanc, Lafite Rothschild,
Lafleur, Trotanoy and Vieux Chateau Certan received his second-best score of 95-97 points.
Martin’s colleague, Antonio Galloni, concurred with Martin, commenting “It is no secret that
Bordeaux endured a challenging growing season… the most skilled winemakers found a way to
make gorgeous wines.” Galloni believes the 2024 is “clearly a Left Bank vintage,” awarding his top
score of the vintage (95-98) to Rauzan-Segla, La Conseillante and Cos d’Estournel. He called the
whites “terrific,”- Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Doisy-Daene L’Extravagant, Haut-Brion Blanc
and Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc were feature amongst Galloni’s top scoring wines.
